School Board Survey Responses

We asked School Board Candidates About Education – Here’s What They Said

When it comes to elections, some of the most important races are the hardest ones to find out about. We think school boards fit in that category.

School board members have significant influence over our local schools. They are the people, essentially volunteers, who determine the policies and budgets that effect everything from class sizes to curricula, learning (and working) conditions for students and staff and things like whether kids will have access to art and foreign language classes.

School boards determine what gets funded. They are the people we elect to meet the educational needs of our local community in a way that reflects our local population, values and interests.

We think their work matters. A lot. And, just like every elected position, not all candidates share the same values or interests. That’s why Class Size Counts contacted every school board candidate whose email address we could locate. We sent them a short three-question survey asking about the values they would bring to their local school boards. These questions were:

  1. While voters mandated class size reductions in grades K-12 when they approved Initiative 1351, the legislature has funded reductions only in Kindergarten through third grade. Do you believe the legislature should fully fund reductions in all grades, including grades 4-12, as mandated by I-1351?
  2. A teacher’s working conditions are a student’s learning conditions. Collective bargaining is an educator’s opportunity to have an equal voice in wages, hours and working conditions. Do you support collective bargaining rights in our public schools?
  3. Do you support using voucher programs to steer tax dollars away from public schools to private and religious schools?

We’ve posted the responses to these questions below. Candidates who have not responded to the survey or who did not have an email address on file with the Secretary of State are not listed. If a candidate left a question blank, it is listed as “Did not answer.”

We hope this information will be helpful to our supporters when they are casting ballots in the November 7thGeneral Election.
