I am a senior at Henrietta Lacks Health and Bioscience High School in Vancouver, WA. My school has just under 500 students so I’ve experienced first-hand the advantages small class sizes offer. Each period, I’m able to take ownership of my education because my voice and opinion make up a significant portion of the class. I have to be engaged as a direct result of a smaller class sizes–it would be obvious and awkward if I weren’t participating.
Because of smaller class sizes, my teacher has the freedom to provide individualized instruction. There are fewer distractions, so we get the most out of every class. I know I am truly learning in these smaller classes where we all work together– the teacher, education support staff and other students to make learning interactive and dynamic. I hope to see more students around the state empowered by small class sizes.
